Donald Trump ends DACA

In the article “A Dream Deferred,” published by The Economist in their September 9 issue, the publication describes how President Donald Trump ends an Obama-era program, and leaves undocumented immigrants brought illegally by their parents to the United States in the hands of the Congress. Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is a program created by Barack Obama in June 2012, and the program grants a two-year work and residency permits to undocumented immigrants younger than 31, who have no criminal record, who came to the U.S. before the age 16 among other requirements. Approximately 800,000 young undocumented immigrants benefit from this program.

Ending DACA was one of Trump’s promises during his presidential campaign, and on September 5th he sent attorney-general Jeff Sessions to announce the end of it. Sessions, who is a fierce immigration skeptic said that “DACA denied jobs to hundreds of thousands of Americans by allowing those same jobs to go to illegal aliens,” however, there is no evidence to sustain such allegation. On the contrary, a survey conducted by the University of California, San Diego, found that DACA recipients contribute to the economy by starting businesses, buying homes, and other productive economic activities. Also, the Migration Policy Institute found that undocumented immigrant’s recipients of this program are more likely to sustain white-collar jobs, in comparison to the manual labor performed by other undocumented workers.

From now on, the affair moves to the Congress, and numerous activist groups and business figures expressed their support to DACA recipients and asked President Trump to consider not to end this program. It is unclear what Congress can do to fix it, meanwhile other old and new initiatives have emerged on the Congress floor such as the DREAM Act, BRIDGE Act, and RAC (Recognizing America’s Children) Act, the last one, unlike DACA, offers a path to citizenship. Nevertheless, the likeliness of an agreement between Democrats and Republicans to pass any of these Acts is unknown.

  1. DACA has been the big topic around the area since President Trump terminated the program itself. This is a major issue to those a part of DACA, for it brings fear to everyone amongst those within DACA. For those brought to the US as a child, who know only of their lives in the US, may now have the possibility of going back to the foreign/unknown country they were born in. This is a devastating situation to those 800,000 educated, raised and employed individuals who have lived the majority of their lives here. The common quote heard most often is “they’re taking our jobs” is senseless, for if one were to look a bit further in, foreigners increase our economic productivity, and the ones “taking the jobs” are recent technology and machine development.

  2. DACA has been a debate topic since President Trump ended the program which young undocumented immigrants can no longer get a two-year work and residency. This leads to many questions and concerns for a lot of people. The reason is because those people who have been working hard to hope for a better life in the U.S might be deported back to their country. This could also separate many families apart. The U.S economy might also be affected from this because foreigners have always known to be the ones who bring in ideas and innovations that lead to potential increase in the U.S economy.

  3. President Trump has urged complete reform of the welfare system, to end the Obama-era DACA initiative is one of his plans. Undoubtedly, this reform not only affect millions of people who were brought into the country illegally, but it is also affect the U.S economy. As the article said, those “Dreamers” are contributing to the economy such as buying homes, and other productive economic activities. At the same time, the population suddenly go down is also mean that the demand and supply also go down. Supply typically exceeds demand, job vacancy, GNI decrease, and other economic issues have followed. If the government send them someplace else, the U.S economy will be sunk into chaos.

  4. It’s a shame that our admitstration sees this as an issue and is using fear and matipulation to sway the people into voting for such a vital and crucial program. Many of these immigrants provide a service to the US economy and give millions of dollars to the economy. Most of these people will work and do the jobs that most Americans will not do. It is already proven that if you cut immigrants from the city’s or towns where they work a shortage of workers will occur and no products will be shipped. Most “Americans” do not want these jobs and will not work in such a high intensive labor job. These dreamers also provide to the economy by buying homes, land and even sending their children to college to give them the chances that they never had. It just breaks my heart that we do not see the importance of these immigrant workers and how much they truly are crucial to the economy.

  5. The DACA, DREAM Act, and BRIDGE Act are great projects to our society. These undocumented immigrants made a great contribution to the American economic. They are law-abiding residents. President Trump claims that these undocumented immigrants take jobs from Americans. However, I don’t believe it. Most immigrants are having jobs that few people want to do. Trump brings the America back to 50 years ago. People openly judge other races people based on their skins.
